Transponder Chip Keys in North Dallas
Most car keys have a small transponder chip that tells the car it’s safe to start. We cut and program transponder keys at your vehicle — for spares, replacements and keys the car has stopped recognizing.
- Chip programmed to your immobilizer
- Spares and replacements
- Done at your vehicle in most cases
- Tested before we leave
A transponder key looks like an ordinary key, but there’s a small chip inside the head. When you turn the key, the car checks the chip. If it doesn’t recognize it, the immobilizer won’t let the engine start — even if the blade turns perfectly. That’s good for security, and it’s why a key that has only been cut, not programmed, won’t start your car.
Signs of a transponder key problem
- The key turns, but the engine won’t start
- A key or security light flashes on the dashboard when you try to start
- A spare that has always worked suddenly doesn’t
- A copy you had cut opens the doors but won’t start the car
Programmed or cloned?
There are two ways to make a transponder key work. Programming adds the new key to your car’s computer as a key of its own. Cloning copies the chip from a key you already have, so the car sees the new key as the old one. Some vehicles only accept one method or the other, and we’ll use the right one for yours.
How it works
- Call us with the year, make and model, and tell us whether you have a working key.
- Get a clear quote once we’ve confirmed the right key and chip.
- We meet you at the car and check your ID and proof of ownership.
- We cut the blade, program or clone the chip, and test that the car starts.
What to have ready
- The year, make and model, plus the VIN if you can find it
- Any working key you still have
- Any spare that has stopped working, so we can check whether it just needs reprogramming
- Photo ID and your registration, title or insurance card
Good to know
The chip and the remote are separate
A key can unlock the doors with its buttons and still fail to start the car, because the remote and the chip do different jobs. When you call, tell us exactly what works and what doesn’t.
It might not be the key
If the security light stays on even with your original key, the problem could be the car’s immobilizer or wiring rather than the key. We’ll check the key first and tell you honestly if it’s a job for a mechanic or the dealer.
Keep a spare that starts the car
A chip key is easiest to copy while you still have one that works. A second programmed key means a lost key is an inconvenience rather than a bigger job — see spare key duplication.

How do I know if my key has a transponder chip?
Most modern car keys have one, usually hidden inside the plastic head. The easiest way to know is to tell us the year, make and model — we’ll confirm when you call.
Why won’t my new key copy start the car?
The blade was cut, but the chip wasn’t programmed or cloned. The key turns in the locks, but the immobilizer doesn’t recognize it. In most cases we can program a chip key so it starts the car.
Can you program a transponder key without the original?
Yes, in most cases. If you have no working key, we follow our lost-key process: identify the right key from your vehicle’s details, cut it and program it at the car.
